Sea Pines Plantation

Sea Pines Plantation is the first of Hilton Head Island's private, gated plantation communities. It was established in 1956 and remains Hilton Head's largest residential and resort neighborhood. Home to the famous red and white striped Harbour Town lighthouse, Sea Pines is made up of more than 5,000 acres of residential, golf, park, preserve, lagoon, and marshland treasures.

Villa and condo prices generally range from $300,000 to more than $1.9 million. Home prices can range from about $550,000 to more than $8,000,000.

Sea Pines Plantation and Resort is the heart and center piece of Hilton Head Island. It is the biggest plantation on the island with the most to offer to vacationers and those who live here year round. With a wide interest of activities such as tennis, golf, and kid's only activities, there is always something going on in Sea Pines. The 4th of July events in Sea Pines are the best on the island. Every year the fireworks never fail to impress.

Sea Pines was founded in 1956 by Charles E. Frasier who bought the land from his father who had purchased land during the Civil War for $60 an acre. In 1958, the first house was built in Sea Pines and beach front property was being sold for $5,350. Four years later, beach front property was being sold at $9,600. In 1959, George Cobb built the first golf course in Sea Pines at the Sea Pines Plantation Golf Club. He built what is now known as the Ocean Course. In 1967 the first gates on the island were constructed. These gates are still at the north entrance. The first Heritage Golf Classic was held in 1969 at Harbour Town Golf Links where it is still held yearly in the spring. In 1971, Sea Pines expanded and bought the land that is currently Hilton Head Plantation. Sea Pines is the home to about 350 species of birds that all live very comfortably within 5,200 acres of land. Since Sea Pines has access to both the Calibogue Sound and the Atlantic Ocean, there are a lot of opportunities to see and enjoy semi-tropical wild life. With tidal pools and lagoons everywhere, alligators and turtles are easy to find. Sea Pines is almost like a city within a city with wonderful restaurants, boutique shopping, water activities, and other ammenities.

Inside the security gates you will find some of the worlds most astounded golf courses and tennis facilities. You will be in close consession to one of the stops on the PGA tour which is the biggest yearly event on the island. In addition to world class golf and tennis, the entire plantation has miles and miles of tree-lined walking and bike riding trails. If you don't plan on leaving Sea Pines Plantation, you could survive your entire vacation with just a bicycle. Also, with all the lagoons and tidal pools, there are immense opportunities for crabbing and fishing. Be sure to observe local guidelines and rules. There are numerous restaurants inside of Sea Pines or just outside the gate. You will find the famous Salty Dog Cafe at the South Beach Marina which has a beach bar and outdoor seating. While there, you can hear the story about Jake the Dog who saved a couple of sailors from drowning. After dinner and drinks, get yourself a Salty Dog t-shirt which is a must for every tourist to take home. Of course, there is lodging in Sea Pines. There are many vacation rental companies on the island, such as Sea Coast Homes and Villas, that offer excellent vacationing experiences. There are also hotels and motels scattered around the island.
